I just read an article called “Digital Billboards…big, bright, bold – and banned” and I started thinking about how this may impact the digital signage industry in Australia. According to the article, the Brisbane (in Australia) City Council has banned “digital billboards”. You’re probably thinking “Say what!”
Here’s an example of a digital billboard:
I can understand the concerns about road safety and how large signs with moving or flashing images can distract drivers since the whole point of advertising is to grab people’s attention but when it comes to endangering people’s lives then this is a big no no.
What is interesting is that the ban also includes warning signs at roadworks. I believe they were referring to these type of signs:
However, the smaller flashing signs (LED ones that has the flashing OPEN) are not banned.
According to the article “new laws would do away with the “one size fits all” approach and allow small businesses to install electronic and digital window signs up to four square metres without having to apply for a permit.”
