Digital signage is one of the booming ways to advertise and it is very easy to use. Nowadays, people are moving towards digitization and you have listed the reasons very well.
Digital signage solution is equally important in the hospitality industry as it is in the service industry. It reduces human efforts and serves visitors or customers with no mistake.
Print advertising is dying and needs to make way for Digital Signage. This is going to be a huge industry over the next decade as the technology develops.
I think they should go for both digital signage solution hanging on the wall and the wayfinding kiosk beside the reception center. Both will serve different purposes to the visitors, equally important.

I have a ‘safety locked’ Samsung Syncmaster 320P which I am trying to connect to via the RS232C port to USB on the other end. I have been able to instlla the MDC Unified version 1217. I have set up a serial connection and am having trouble finding the monitor. Do you have any suggestions on what would help? Does the Syncmaster 320P work with this version on MDC?
Yes the MDC software should work. It’s possible the RS232C to USB could be the issue. Have you tried any other device to make sure that the actual cable works?

It’s true that digital signage should pay off, otherwise it’s of no use for business. However, in some cases signage cannot serve anything but informational purpose. Like, for example, at school or UNI. The displayed info can actually save lives, if, for example, it’s a warning of some natural disaster. I guess for a public institution, implementation of such technology wouldn’t be so painful (or am I wrong?), but private institutions will certain need some pay-off.
Just Implementing Digital Signage solution is not an answer. When it can make your brand then it can also badly impact on your brand. Choosing right content to show with that is more important.

I have 15 LH46MVPLBB/ZA monitors. I have daisy chained the serial ports and connected the first screen to my computer using a USB to serial adapter. However the MDC is not recognizing and of the monitors. what am I doing wrong?
On the Samsung Screen did you set it to use RS232 instead of RJ45.
Another thing to check is to make sure the USB to Serial adapter actually works by connecting to a different serial device if you have one or even go through the local drivers settings and check if there is communication.

Is there a way to connect two screens without a source/computer? I guess the “source” would be screen 1, and screen 2 would just mimic whatever is on the first display.
I have 4 of the new 65″ QMF series display series. The documentation seems to indicate that it can be used for a videowall, but there is DisplayPort Out on these monitors to create the loop-through. The manual illustrates how to daisy-chain control using RS-232 or RJ-45, but includes nothing on how to pass video from one monitor to the next.
Thanks for your comment. Yes it’s interesting the QMF doesn’t have a Display Port Out but 2 Display Ports In. Have you tried connecting DP2 on Screen 1 to DP1 on Screen 2 and so on?
Given that more people are on mobile devices than PCs, it is no wonder the market is moving in that direction. Also, I went to a digital signage fair in Germany earlier this month and the main thing I got from it is how rapidly digital signage is growing. I mean, it is going through the roof! It will be interesting to observe where this form of marketing will go.
I’m trying to set up a video wall using dh55e although mdc looks like the answer no one talks about input. Forgive me if I’m being slow but I want to use an HDMI or doing source do connect the same signal via a d.a. to all four screens and the mdc then does the rest?
There are several ways to setup the video wall and below is a brief outline:
1. Make sure you have the Input to the first screen as using HDMI.
2. Then connect a display port cable from the Output Display port on the first screen to the Input on the Second Screen
3. Then keep daisy chaining the Display port so that the output from one screens goes into the input until you have reached screen 4. For screen 4 all you will be using is the input.
5. Connect all the screens to the network and make sure RJ45 is configured as the management interface
6. Setup the video wall so each screen has it’s own unique ID. This can be done using the remote control or via MDC
7. Setup the video wall so that it’s configured as 4×4

I want to control a single ME32C display from my PC (e.g. power ON/Off) with a custom application I am writing (C#/C++ application). I can do it with RS232C interface but i prefer the LAN interface.
Can I do it from my own application (that can send Ethernet commands)? What is the communication protocol (TCP/UDP)? What is the port of the Display?

I have a samsung syncmaster 400dx-2 that was locked using an older version of the MDC software (i can only use it using a vga connection). Any ideea on how could i reset this action?
I’m assuming you don’t know the pin code to unlock the screen. The only way I’ve heard to unlock the screen if you don’t know the PIN, is to remove the internal battery (like the computer one) so that the memory is cleared.
The default PIN the screens are set to is 0000. You may want to try different codes.

If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software again.

By the way… i don’t have a screen anymore. It’s locked in “pc connect” via vga connection. This is actualy the issue. I can’t change it to hdmi or any other source.
I have one laptop and want to open 4 different browser on it and display each browser on different screen of video wall. Am using ud46-p . How can I do this using our end laptop connected to video wall and each screen showing different browsers.
Yes you can do this. My suggestion is to use a tool called Launcher Dock http://www.launcherdock.com which will allow you to start automatically a browser or application on each screen. You just need to set the location of where the browser should launch. The tool is free and good luck.

is it possible to use this software to create a 2×2 video wall using 4X DM32E samsung tvs? i can’t seem to figure out how to do it using this software. I have the screens connected to a switch via rj45 cables and then an rj45 cable connecting the switch to the computer. The tvs do come with magic info but i can’t seem to set up a video wall using the magic info application.
You will need to firstly configure the screens themselves. Make sure you have configured the screens so that they are using RJ45 and that the magic info software can see each screen individually by giving each screen a unique ID.
If you can’t use MagicInfo then try using MDC and see if you can connect to them via that software.

I’d like to connect MDC with 4 x UED46 monitors and am hoping to use it to change between a 2 x 2 video wall with the same input (DA’d HDMI probably), and showing a single input on the DVI input, unscaled.
Does anyone know if you can assign the video wall to specific inputs or will I need to switch video wall off to then switch to a single input?

Great to see you using MDC. From what I understand, do you want to display the same content on all 4 screens via HDMI and then on each screen individual content via DVI?

I need some help here… MDC which I downloaded (from the link you provided), looks a bit different than on the slides on this site.
I’ve just connected my monitor via RS232 and MDC says that I have 1 connected device but all tabs are grey, so I can’t do anything but change user settings and logout.
Do I have to have multiply monitors connected to start using this application? I just need it because it has option of virtual remote control which I don’t have to unlock Safety Lock on my monitor.

With regards to the Safety Lock, there is a button on the remote control to Lock/Unlock the screen, then you need to enter the pin. The pin by default is 0000.

Hi, stupid question but how can i get my PC to see the Monitor? I have a Samsung 320TSN and I have downloaded MDC and the display driver but the MDC programme doesnt find the Monitor, if wont find the IP? is there something i need to do to obtain the IP on the display?
That’s not a stupid questions. I’ve also encountered a similar issue in the past. You just need to make sure the Multi Control Setting on your screen has the MDC connection set to RJ45 MDC. By default its set to RS232.
Well o both around 22 monitors model 323T Samsumg they comingo with some central configuration so i would like do unlock the with MDC software for they work individual like simple monitors.

They need to take into consideration, all the areas where they want to improve including, communication with customers, in-store spending, advertising and visual appeal. Only after they have established their need from this venture, must they proceed to finding the right vendor and choose the desirable location. Paying attention to the design of company content and making it visually appealing is also vital for better digital signage.
The installation is very clean and the video wall looks great without question but I wonder about what the purpose was of implementing such a wall? If you look at the image, the 2nd & 3rd column screens together equal the size of the screens used in columns 1 & 4. So why not just have 3 columns with all the screens being the same size? Too bad we don’t know more about this project to understand what they were trying to accomplish.

Question: I have 4ea. Samsung DB40D monitors in a 2×2 configuration. Is it possible to connect all four monitors via Ethernet as opposed to connecting one via Ethernet and then daisy chaining the rest via Serial connections?
Yes, you can connect all for monitors via Ethernet. That is now our current setup.
All you need to do is install a switch so that each screen is connected to the network. Then ensure that each screen obtains an IP address and then configure it so that the MDC software can see it.
This is actually a pretty interesting post, At first I had problem reading the sign on the “ayam” food truck – it is interesting a “water coconut” food truck – where is this food truck?
This food truck was located in Sydney Australia for a Chinese New Year event. Based on the information on the truck I think this could have been just a once off unless they reprint the text on the side of the truck as it specifically says Chinese New Year.
The input sources are the devices you want to connect to the TV. For example, if you want to connect your PC using HDMI to the TV then you would need to connect it to the HDMI input of the TV. Hope this helps.

Do you know if these can be used effectively for digital signage application like panels in different locations connected on LAN instead of daisy chained in close proximity? Samsung DB22D for example?
The Samsung commercial grade screens are designed to be used for digital signage via the WAN or LAN. The DB22D screeens have a RJ45 port so that they can be connected to the network for management purposes and also for MagicInfo Lite.
As Richard mentioned, it is illegal in more countries for TV displays to be seen by the driver, as they are a distraction. There are many car dealerships deploying digital signage, from wall mounted to free standing, some are even deploying outdoor LED video walls, to promote new model launches.
Forget the digital signage, and get behind the wheel of an Audi RS6!

I agree with you Philippe. We also generally don’t recommend our clients to use residential screens. In Australia, there is also no warranty if the consumer screen is used in a commercial environment. That doesn’t stop businesses who are on a tight budget to purchase these consumer grade screens.
One recent example that I heard of is that a company used 4 consumer screens for a video wall. A few months down the track one of the screens failed. So what happened? The screen model was end of life and they couldn’t purchase it. So they had to buy a second hand one from Ebay. What now happens if another one fails and they can’t find one on Ebay? They will most likely purchase 4 new ones (commercial grade). OUCH!
From experience, out of the many screens we’ve installed, not one has failed. This includes the old plasma commercial screens.
Also just to note that some of the screen manufacturers (LG and Samsung) provide onsite warranty for commercial screen.
A nice article there Nate. I do however have to take issue with your comments on using consumer displays in place of commercial displays. I agree the costs of commercial displays are far in excess of those of consumer/domestic displays but it needs to be pointed out the reasons why.
I don’t know about the warranties offered in the US but here in the UK it is almost guaranteed to void any warranty on a consumer screen if installed in a commercial setting. Yes we’ll always get those people who say “for the cost of a consumer screen i can afford to replace it every 9-12 months”, while being true is it really worth the hassle having to source, purchase, install a new screen every 9 months?, you try getting the same model you purchased last time, I bet you can’t!
What about duty cycle (the amount of time a screen is on compared to off). This is typically far lower for a consumer screen than a commercial screen, even low priced commercial displays can have low duty cycles of 12-14 hours.
Other things to be aware of are brightness, viewing angle, cooling, bracket choices, player mounting, cable containment and a whole host of other issues which should be considered before deployment.
Digital signage CAN be done on a budget, personally i feel the screen/display is one of the most important aspects of the installation (apart from content, which is a another discussion altogether!) but i don’t think this is the first place the budget should be cut.

Digital Signage is simply the technology of controlling the digital screens from a remote location, dividing it in to multiple regions and showcasing different content on the screens. As easy as this may sound, it is a very effective tool for infotainment and revenue generation across most of the industries. Each industry will have its own pain points of communication with its customers which can be rightly addressed using digital signage.
I think they should clearly specify their law on which flashing display to ban or they might end up eating their words. They should also specify which types of displays are allowed so that people especially businessmen can follow.
Creating an effective sign requires as much science as it does art – and throw in an understanding of psychology and knowledge of how our brains process information and from there you create the signage having the impact desired.
I agree with the comments on Fail Features. In an advertisement like digital signage it is really rewarding to hire or consult persons or companies that can provide the professional help. Establishments make sure it is the proper way of displaying a digital signage, it should have quality contents, colors and contrast should be appropriate with the product being introduce and consider the perfect location for the signage and its size.

I really like the sound of the eco mode, getting brightness right can be a challenge so having something which can just adjust accordingly would be very beneficial.
There’s really no excuse for businesses not to take advantage of video for internal communications. Whether or not you have a digital signage network, internal video is a powerful AND reliable tool to deliver important news to employees.

Most digital signage software allows at least simple transitions. Transitioning ads or digital signage content will not allow screens to ‘burn’ images into the screen. It is only when unchanging images are on the screens for long periods of time that this happens. Try using at least two layouts that the screen transitions through.

There are many ways to choose an installer for your LED outdoor signs. Like any other purchase decision, it comes down to a balance between price, service and quality. Make sure you do your homework to make sure that you’re maximizing your investment return.

I agree with one of your first few bullet points about being “now affordable”, signage hasn’t been very affordable as a replacement for traditional paper menu boards most of the time.
LED usage will be come the mainstream lighting choice in near future. Prices used to be a barrier, but they are dropping so fast that soon LED lighting will eventually take over the role incandescent bulbs used to play in people’s daily life.

* theft – here in Taiwan, unlikely somebody will push the guy to steal this bike..
* what happens if it rain? is it a waterproof screen? : not sure…
* what happens if there’s a strong wind? will the bike fall? : I guess…
* will pedalling generate more electricity for the battery to run the screens? : not far as I remember
* safety – if the screens draw too much attention to drivers will it cause accidents? : do we prevent hot chicks to go out because they can cause accident? 🙂

Hey I love your blog I was just researching some digital sign stuff and ran across your site. You have some great information in here, It is very informative. I actually just installed a digital billboard in my hair salon and we love it so far! The website that I posted is not us per say but that is the company that we ended up going with for some graphics. I am not very experienced with many companies but I will say that they did a great job designing some digital content for us. We are already making some money off of it! Hey, although I know it tends to be bad form to revive old threads, I did want to say that there is a new solution for digital signage in dental offices. If you’re interested in a fun way to entertain your patients, without advertising (shocking I know), then you should check out Dr. Know’s Waiting Room TV, its a fun and innovative way to entertain your patients while they’re in the office.
While i’ve not used pre-payed 3G yet, i’ve setup a friends linux laptop to auto-boot to KDE4 login he enters his password and the desktop starts, connects to the internet useing Plasma-NM which will prefference to wi-fi picking the strongest signal, failing that it autoconnects to 3G, and registers it’s IP address with DynDNS so I can ssh to his laptop if need be. He much prefers entering one password and then has the browser up and surfing vs. Windows where there are many many popup’s about anti-virus not being able to update, windows security popups and other popups he has to close to eventually being able to connect via the provided 3g connection manager, then manually doing all the up-dates for all the addons windows needs takes 10+ minutes vs. < 1min with linux/kde and not being stressed with viruses especially when doing internet banking. His system is very similar to standalone system, but he is a low-skill user who expects it to 'just work'(tm) linux provides this, windows fails big time.
I agree clearly folks aren’t going to carry 3D glasses around just to watch peoples ads. Not seen any of these locally in the UK but it will be interested to watch development to see if it becomes viable.
Interesting to read however it seems that digital signage technology is progressing but slowly.
I recall producing one of the first interactive kiosks for the Harvey museum in 1995 and thinking ‘this will set the world alight’. That said, at least flat screens and cheaper, lighter display technology is moving it on at a better pace now; plus the ability to update and download video and display content remotely and across multiple networks.
Great post, but do you really think touch screen is the future? even with the release of kinect inspired technologies that enables gesture based interaction which can potentially be cheaper, easier to maintain and encourage more interactivity since multiple users can be using it at the same time.

This is really interesting take on the concept. I never thought of it that way. I came across this site recently which I think it will be a great use of new ideas and informations.
We needed a fixed IP to push the content from the server, so we created an APN (the 3G provider delivers the encrypted data to a carrier who routes all information to our ISP, there we finish the tunnel). Our players are not open to the internet (it is a critical retail solution, so we wanted to avoid any attack). Furthermore, this solution is safer but cheaper as well, we don’t have to pay for mobile fixed IP-s, here in Spain they are still very expensive.
Most of Players out there are full of features that you will not use, or if you do, they won’t bring anything good to your screen.Most of those developers think that if it technically can be done, it should be done. And that is not good. They don’t know about marketing, they don’t study viewer behavior. Mostly, they never did business using that player. They just add a lot of of ‘cool’ features to the players and, as a result, charge very high prices for the players.
If you know what you need. If you keep it simple and don’t try to imitate the ‘big’ players. You can get your own reliable Player for a fraction of the price. And believe me. In advertising the simple approach is what works.

Most manufacturers have developed their system based on what everyone in the market demanded I.e. tried to fit all the features and requests based what their clients wanted even though they may not use it at all. And yes this means the client and end users ends up paying extra for it.

Any of them have failed. If any of them fails in the future, no problem. It was already amortizated long time ago, since it is cheap and worked for several years.
There is no clear justification to buy a industrial screen, paying more than a double price.
The price difference is based just in marketing reasons. Since companies can pay more than consumers, so the companies have to pay more. Thats all.
The same happens with many other products and services. For example DSL Internet providers charge a lot more to company or a business than to a home consumer, for the same Internet service speed.

Firefox works really well as a piece of digital signage software. I to especially like the add-ons as they make the options of what to do with the digital signage wider.
I loved the world cup and the best part was the LED screens that they kept in fan parks. The atmosphere was really amazing and I hope they do this again for other sporting events.
Digital displays and digital signage has really begun to help improve our lives and make what we do easier. I hope the use of digital signage and the use of LED screens improves in the future.
LED screens are amazing. I love how they work and how they help improve everything in the entertainment and advertising industry. Sports on LED screens and big screens are great to and digital signage in railway stations is just as good. So much you can do with digital.

Bob, many thanks for the insight. We have been in the digital signage industry for quite a number of years now and we agree with everything you’ve said. For small new businesses, I believe it’s hard to raise capital especially when you don’t have the client base or the portfolio. We were at one stage thinking of heading down the path of looking for investors but didn’t like the idea of giving away a percentage of the company.
In Australia, there aren’t too many digital signage network operators because the investment capital to setup the network is too high. I have noticed that large advertising companies who already have exposure and the cashflow are actually sustaining this operation (I’m guessing that they are potentially offsetting this cost from their existing print media).
What do you suggest for new small businesses who are looking to raise capital or even look for financing companies.
Similar to Bill, we have found that the presence of movement tends to naturally draw the eye, as opposed to more static content.
As far as static content goes, we’ve had luck differentiating with the usage of accent colors. Features like thresholds that trigger a specific color (red being the obvious choice) for a key statistic tends to have positive effects. The thresholds must be set appropriately so that the thresholds are not routinely triggered, effectively wearing out your viewing audience.
I think quite a number of businesses like yourself who come from the traditional static signs are hesitant to use this technology because of the technical support required, however I would suggest you work with someone like Advertise Me who have been in the industry for a number of years and are able to provide a solution that requires very little technical support. Advertise Me is able to provide you with the complete package and not just supply you with hardware – they can support you both technically and strategically.
I’ve got to agree with you on all the benefits of digital signage, but I am a little wary to jumping in due mainly to the continual technical support that I can forsee clients needing. I’m not arguing that they are not thte future, I’m just a little wary.

As I’ve got it, I could purchase 3G Broadband PCMCIA only with the intention to use it in a 3G Broadband router, and most digital signage players do not have PCMCIA slots, right? Worst is that my laptop does not support PCMCIA card, therewith.
Rebooting systems should only ever be a last resort. systems housekeeping and deployment should be automated with tools like puppet or at least rsync. Achieving 24×7 availability has been around for 20+ years. My experience with 154 systems in registries over 200 days in semi hostile environment (no aircond after hours, no ups) shows 11 systems rebooted, 7 powerfailures, 2 hardware failures and 2 unknown/software failures. Obviously these were not Windoze systems.
Content should be handled by a repository system enforcing the workflow and distribution to devices.
What we have found in the past is that site surveys are done in winter when the light is lower and a demo is set, up then the client signs it off, then when in the summer and the brighter sunlight the issue is raised.
It is similar to wireless network signals, when they first came out and when in the summer businesses find they cannot access the internet, they found that the trees had leaves on and this was the problem as autumn was when the site surveys were done.
The biggest screen I’ve seen was at a U2 concert about 5 years ago. The sign was massive, providing a backdrop for the band, and pretty much blinding anyone who looked directly at it.
I have built a piece of software that goes into the digital signage system that emails me if and when their is a problem with the digital sign. This software was a simple piece of php used with linus, ideal for digital signage systems to make sure they are live.
Your first tip you mention is very true. With the competitiveness of digital signage growing so quickly you better have an edge on everyone else in the field. I have discovered that placing importance on unique enclosures helps greatly.

Stereoscopic 3D for digital signage is really catching on. N4D’s 20 years of perception research has been developed into patented processes for creating 3D content creation or 2D to 3D conversion. We are currently in talks with digital signage networks to provide 3D content as well as no-glasses-needed 3D displays.
It appears that the ArtDuck product is 2.5 D (or some call it CAD drawing 3D) in that it gives a great appearance of depth but only inside the screen and is not designed to be projected stereoscopically beyond the screen plane.

think you are barking up the wrong tree here. These LCD screens are in the front of the car and digital signage would surely be distratcing to the driver and possibly illegal (as front mounted TVs are in some countries) – GPS and menu systems are permissable but I doubt advertising would be.

We’ve had situations whereby the player’s time was not synched or did not have the correct daylight savings setting and this really messed up the content scheduling for our client. I’m sure other digital signage businesses must have experience the same situations we have.
I agree with the other commentator, great article. I thnk the importartance of synchronisation will become increasingy more important as digital signage gets more sophisticated. I can imagine people downloading content directly from live streams and distributing around a signage network – I also think more interaction with digital signage will be the way forward and I can imagine NTP servers and other time synchronisation tools becoming more important.

Its a pity I couldn’t capture the actual display of the tall LED signage, the camera lens of my blackberry does not seem to snap well at night. It is actually a large LED display rotating between moving adverts.
Just getting into the signage arena, I understand where your coming from. There are so many different types and options, one can get confused. The building with the tall light looks sweet.
I don’t think what google wave provides is a good match to the requirements of digital signage. Providing a CMS
capability can be done with google docs already and free if 7gb or so is enough and can stage content in chunks if need be. Access the content is quite easy if using a language like Ruby via their REST’full api.
Great questions asked by Advertise Me and some great comments made by Concerto. I definitely share the same mindset with regards to the last question (next big thing) – focus needs to be in interactivity.
Open source models are great for a number of reasons –
1. there is a wider community involved in improving and sharing the source code
2. there is no costs passed onto the client
However I do question how digital signage companies are to profit out of these solutions. How would one charge for this kind of setup? I’ve never worked with open source technologies before and keen to find out how.

It depends whether the digital SaaS platform has been designed with redundancy and external backups. Basically, the SaaS platform would reside on a dedicated server that hosts the application. So if there is no strategy in place for the hosting company to backup the content on an external site (i.e what happens if the building gets burnt down?), then you would loose all your content.
Seems affordable for small scale projects but one of the issues is the battery life. Can the reader recharge the small screen player? Can it be reused?
regarding the market price fro China on small screens motion player the price should be min $40 piece… if you order by thousands of units. + printed stuff and integration… $65… each erader will show it to around 10 people. anyone knows an advertiser ready to pay $6.5 per viewer?
The proposed solution is too expensive in Capex and I do not see the ROI.
Future of this category of advertising mixing printed and digital motion will come in the next years with the flexible screens (Philips, Sony and others are already showing prototypes on their websites and some major exhibitions like Las Vegas CES). Today, we have seen already outdoor tries using e-ink.

Digital media is certainly becoming the main focus for advertsiing but print will never go away as tacticle gifts such as promotional gifts deliver a personal experience that digital media alone can not delver.
Next year will be in Sydney, they alternate between Sydney and Melbourne every year.
Re digital signage, almost every stand had some part of it either showcasing their services or just pure entertainment.
Great show, although turnout was just average. Good thing (from what I’ve noticed) is that most of the visitors are genuine. So I guess quality counts over quantity. Look forward for next year.
Well written. Do you know that the digital dish TV network allows you to have hundreds of channel. Satellite TV network has variety of channels starting from basic channels, music video channels for children, educational channels and family channels. You also get to watch your local channels at much affordable rates.

The signage app would be a really cool addition. My iphone does just about everything, so one more app couldn’t hurt. To think 15 years ago we did not even have cell phones 🙂
The iphone as apple have defined does not allow any sort of programming language to be installed on it. flash includes actionscript a javascript language and it therefor violates Apples terms. This is unlikely to change in the near term. This is going to limit severely the applicability of the iPhone to digital signage.

The Chrome OS’s whole raison d’etre make it bad for digital signage. The whole idea is that its a stripped down OS (at least in its initial launch). This means it’ll be lacking drivers and packages–it’ll only work on the netbooks it’ll ship in. It won’t be able to run most of the apps a real Linux distribution would be able to and it’ll have even more trouble supporting different types of hardware than a proper distribution.

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but there are several digital signage companies that are using the Linux OS with the firefox browser as their digital signage application/player. Having said this, I strongly believe that using the Google Chrome OS is definitely viable especially when the Chrome browser is meant to be much faster than the other browsers.
There are also several issues that I’m aware of with the linux firefox browser and third party apps like Adobe Flash, Video players etc. So hopefully the Google Chrome OS will be able to resolve these issues.
In terms of cost savings, it was meant to be a comparison with digital signage applications that required the Microsoft Windows OS.
Chrome OS will certainly be interesting to watch develop, especially now that Google has OEM agreements with HP, Acer, Asus and Dell. Unfortunately, the author doesn’t know very much about it beyond the PR hype.
Chrome OS will never be a good operating system for Digital Signage Players. Allow me to explain.
1) This is not a new OS, it’s just Linux with the Chrome browser bolted on as the primary UI. This is nothing new, several linux distros like Moblin have been doing this for a long time. (moblin.org)
2) There’s no cost advantage. Several DS vendors already support Linux, which has a 0$ cost.
3) Specifically geared for the netbook experience. Netopps certainly make decent Players, but definitely not netbooks. Seeing as the OS will be installed directly by the OEMs, the driver set will probably be pretty restricted.
4) All applications run in the cloud. You cannot install an application like a Digital Signage Player that runs locally on the machine and uses the local system resources.
Chrome OS is specifically designed to facilitate the everyday online experience: getting online fast, checking your email, watching youtube, updating your facebook, tweeting about Michael Jackson, etc, etc.
So that’s why Chrome OS will be woefully inadequate as a Digital Signage Player operating system. On the other hand, you could probably use it to administer your network via one of the numerous web-based interfaces, provided you DS vendor supports the Chrome/Webkit browser.
Thanks Kevin and Steve, it’s interesting to know that there are actually companies out there who have built a digital signage application for the Iphone. When I get some time I’ll see if I can test it. Also, who are your main users or which industry are you targeting for this particular application?
I really don’t think so. I can’t see why anyone would want to open an application to be fed messages by someone else? I doubt it would replace the iPhone main screen, so it wouldn’t fit into normal day-to-day activity (like ‘normal’ digital signage does).
There are plenty of RSS feed applications on the iPhone which already provide various information sources. And they’re personalised too, so you get the feeds you choose. I personally use Google Reader on my iPhone and it’s all the hand-held information I need.
However, will the iPhone be used as a tool for digital signage? Absolutely. Like a window into a web-connected world, the iPhone (and other web-enabled phones) offers a great way to manage screens, update messages/prices, etc.
So as a screen? No. As a way to control screens? Most certainly.

I’m all for keeping costs down, but I’m with you about ‘doing the right thing’.
All of what our company does (selling video content for DOOH – including music videos) is based on exploitation of creative works and we are very careful to make sure that all rights owners get paid. We’ve heard stories of one competitor who’s been sailing a bit too close to the wind a couple of times and of course they got caught out and caused themselves and their clients great embarrasment. Which is not good, but worse, it was the the end-user customer ( a retail chain) that got sued first and thats really not good for our industry. We all work hard to develop our businesses so anything that goes against this is to be strongly discouraged.
You do well to explain the issues around music rights to your readers – its true that there are many misunderstandings around – so keep up the good work!
Music should be definitely paid for and I’m not suggesting that musicians who are not be paid. My post was more relating to the licensing fee and requirements – just advising businesses to do the “right thing”.

I don’t know how it works in Australia but in Europe artists can join collecting societies without passing via a label and can therefore benefit from ‘neighbouring rights’ – i.e. the use of music other than directly from record sales.
You might suggest to Legaci that they check out the rights situation and take whatever action they need to in order to be able to earn a living from their creative endeavours.

Bill has many good points here. However I think that the next big thing in digital signage is content harmonization and transformation. Bill is focusing on the \cool\ technology, which is great, but there needs to be a solution that can first drive more businses from advertisers. Sure we can talk all day and night about holographic interactivity and facial recognition virtual reality, but the true reality is that this industry needs a sophisticated solution that can unify all digital networks so that advertisers can buy media more efficiently in this space.
With the new round of LED signage going up, many businesses are again looking to upgrade their existing display(s). While the new LED lighting may be more expensive upfront, the savings are immediate and systems usually pay for themselves in under 3-years. Utilizing an equipment lease to obtain such energy saving equipment almost always makes excellent sense.
There are two modes of LCDs, normally white and normally black. This means that, at rest, not powering the transistor, the window (sub-pixel of the LCD) is either open or closed. LCDs were once all “normally white” since a display is usually more white than black (look at your PC monitor). Normally white will use less power if more of the display is white or a light color. This mode was picked years ago so notebooks would use less power. The problem arose when the notebook industry, followed by the monitor industry, and finally the TV industry found that dead transistors meant that the little sub-pixel window is “open” all the time. This is the cause of the dreaded stuck bright red, green or blue dot.
The answer is that all large area LCDs are normally black. Normally blacks use more power on a typical image (if there is any such thing as a typical image), than normally white displays. So, today’s set use more power but the dead pixels are black and not stuck on. A fair compromise in my opinion.
I finally managed to resolve an issue with synchronising my outlook with the blackberry storm via the desktop manager.
The issue: When using Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Outlook 2007 with exchange 2003 all on the same box, I couldn’t synchronise outlook with the blackberry – issues with mapi32
Solution: Go to a good PC which has Outlook 2007 installed. Follow these steps”
Copy the olmapi32.dll from the good pc c:\program files\microsoft office 2007\office12\ to your c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\ on the problem PC
Copy the mapi32.dll from the good pc c:\windows\system32 to c:\windows\system32 on the problem PC
Copy msmapi32.dll from the good pc c:\program files\common files\system\msmapi\1033 to c:\program files\common files\system\msmapi\1033 on the problem PC
I think that is a great idea! I just had a root canal a few months ago and I was thinking then how nice it would be to have a TV screen to pass the time. I have been to dentists in the past that offered movies, but a lot of the time there is very limited choice. I think a combination of Digital Signage (using scrolls and side bars for advertising) and a digital movie server would be ideal. Allow the patient to select their content and give them some nice headphones to hear. The Dentist could have some sort of mute button so he could speak with the patient when needed…..

This is a great point to bring up. But I’ve found that many news organizations allow customers to use RSS feeds as long as they are given proper attribution in the ticker.
However, it’s always a good tip to check out what the various rules are for each feed.

I believe Asian countries do not have any regulations relating to outdoor digital signage… or i could be wrong.
Off premise advertising sign laws typically pre-date the advent of digital signage and therefore do not specifically address digital signs. The California code, similar in many states, requires changeable signs to change in one motion and hold for a minimum of four seconds. This is one reason why you do not see video or animation on digital billboards.
Los Angeles has a history of sign code litigation and settlement agreements that pre-dates digital billboards. The introduction of digital bulletins to the Los Angeles market via both static board conversions and new structure builds has contributed to this latest effort at billboard regulation and will likely restrict digital deployments if/when legislation is approved.
I was walking past a shop today and noticed that there was a screen located on the wall opposite the cash register. I thought about this post and decided to walk into the store and ask the shop owner why did he decided to install the screen at that location. His response was simple: “I can easily see the screen from here whilst serving my customers.”
Would I be right in assuming that rather than using CATx a better solution to extend video is Fibre? That way you can achieve a better bandwidth to carry the video?
Video-over-CATx systems I’ve used send RGB similar to a VGA cable, not data like on your computer network (hence you can’t mix them or throw in a D-Link somewhere in the middle). The good one’s will take a VGA signal and send it up to 2000ft. @ 1920×1080. The issue when you’re sending a video over long distances is that the red, green and blue signals travel at different speeds. The longer the distance, the more pronounced the lag between colors. This leads to distortions in the image like ghosting. That said, these systems include the possibility to tune them–adjust the speeds of the signals and other characters to get a perfect image. The same issue happens with any long video cable, that’s why commercial LCD DID’s include long cable compensation and the same type of tuning capabilities. I’m not familiar with systems that take digital signals (i.e. HDMI), so I don’t know if any of the above would apply.

Digital Signage has not really gathered that much momentum in South Africa. We’ve come as far as the LED billboard and that is where it stopped. We do have small players sprinkled here and there trying to make things happen. I believe there are other countries that are left behind even further.
We’ve had some nifty Japanese technology on display at a recent exhibition though.
So how would you about getting other countries on par with the rest of the world as far as digital signage is concerned?
Audio is the most widespread and noticeable way to initially engage a consumer. By editing the music with the content and creating transitions to other types of messaging be it newsy, or entertainment or an ad, will make it palatable and more like a comfortable experience for the consumer. They will be entertained and hear and see your message
Its an interesting concept, I am interested to see what the turn out will be. Operating a network on a global scale doesn’t sound like an easy task for a group of small businesses to cook up – but it’s not impossible either.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on this and see how far it goes. Is there currently anything in place to get this ball rolling?

Maybe the national network and maybe later on int’l network, could be broken down into sectors. When pitching advertising to large companies present the different sectors to them and they choose where they want to advertise. Also, maybe we can pitch emergency mgmt also. Once again just throwing ideas around. I think if enough people get on board it could be beneficial to everyone involved.
I agree to both the post and the comment above. You’d be surprised that many digital signage installs are done perfect at the end point attached to the screen, but loosely open when you have to connect a router/modem to the other end.
In saying that, I attended a call the other day to fix up some internet issues at a local cafe. The owner didn’t know what the password to the router was, being typical of me I tried my luck. Not surprisingly, I got in first go – the default admin/admin had not been changed. Now I had free access to their network, including the attractive large screen on the main wall.
In response to Don, I totally agree with you. Digital signage companies really need to follow up and keep in contact with all of their clients to ensure that they are getting their ROI properly and in the right way. Its not called a Digital signage solution if all you provide is just the hardware without any good use to it. Because it is still a concept in its infant stages in some countries, I don’t think business owners have the proper mentality of how it should be used vs. how they want it to be used.
The idea sounds great, and if done well can open up many gateways to a lot of things.
But the question I ask is “how will it be used?”. That is, once we have this amazing global network of operators, what do we do with it?
Probably one of the assumed applications would be advertising (of many other uses), because this is the medium that will fund the network. I understand that if it was managed nationally, this can be controlled. But as a global network, you will find a lot of problems with management rights – if Coca Cola was to be approached, which country would you send the proposal to?
Having said that, perhaps a national network would work well, or I could be missing the whole point to this?
This is a great idea if we all come together with a plan. Everyone please leave a comment on how you feel about it. It could be a great opportunity for the small business owners.

Digital signage has an image problem to overcome. While checking out a book at a local library, I pointed out a digital sign behind the checkout counter. Both librarians rolled their eyes, saying they thought the sign was tacky, wishing it wasn’t there. I must admit, the message being broadcast–luxurious spa treatments–seemed to have little to do with the interests of the average library patron. And my own experience with so-called “clinic TV,” including health-related programs displayed in doctors’ waiting rooms, isn’t much better. Most “shows” I’ve watched while waiting in a doctor’s office have been blatantly self-serving and lacking in credibility.

In the past two weeks, I’ve noticed that several businesses in Australia have increased prices on their products. I hope prices will come down in the next couple of months as it may now be more difficult to win clients if prices are high.
The current economy is obviously a challenging time for the advertising sector in general which will have a high impact in the digital signage space. Like in any bad times there are also opportunities for many niche companies that are able to provide good value. If digital signage media owners in the Out Of Home sector who are able to provide low rates and good value (High visibility) as compared to other traditional mediums like TV, Print & Radio. With reducing ad spends (There is talk of ad budgets getting reduced by 50%), ad spenders will look at alternative mediums with good visibility. The overheads and costs are low as compared to other traditional mediums and this should help the digital medium to gain more prominance amongst ad spenders also.
We’ve been informed that two companies have gone bust:
Reactrix – this a USA based company which provided interactive digital signage
Novax – this is a French digital signage company in Pharmaceutical industry
We’ll add more to the list as we get more information sent to us.
It is great to hear that you’re intending to start a mobile digital advertising business.
Besides the fundamental digital signage equipment that you’ve mentioned, you will need to consider how you will be updating the content onto the computer (or digital signage player). If you intent to remotely manage and update content to these devices you will need to connect these devices to a cellular network – ie 3G, CDMA (basically connect them to the Internet). This will give you the option to also centrally manage and distribute the content to multiple box vans.
There are many digital signage products and software in the market which will help you setup your digital signage solution. As a start, you may want to visit the digital signage portal products page (http://www.digitalsignageportal.com) for a list of products and software packages.
By the way which country are you from? Are there any legal issues with displaying LCD screens in the box van – I’m assuming the vehicle will be stationary or the screens will be in locations where other drivers will not be distracted with the animiated content.

I have a ‘safety locked’ Samsung Syncmaster 320P which I am trying to connect to via the RS232C port to USB on the other end. I have been able to instlla the MDC Unified version 1217. I have set up a serial connection and am having trouble finding the monitor. Do you have any suggestions on what would help? Does the Syncmaster 320P work with this version on MDC?
Yes the MDC software should work. It’s possible the RS232C to USB could be the issue. Have you tried any other device to make sure that the actual cable works?

It’s true that digital signage should pay off, otherwise it’s of no use for business. However, in some cases signage cannot serve anything but informational purpose. Like, for example, at school or UNI. The displayed info can actually save lives, if, for example, it’s a warning of some natural disaster. I guess for a public institution, implementation of such technology wouldn’t be so painful (or am I wrong?), but private institutions will certain need some pay-off.
Just Implementing Digital Signage solution is not an answer. When it can make your brand then it can also badly impact on your brand. Choosing right content to show with that is more important.

I have 15 LH46MVPLBB/ZA monitors. I have daisy chained the serial ports and connected the first screen to my computer using a USB to serial adapter. However the MDC is not recognizing and of the monitors. what am I doing wrong?

On the Samsung Screen did you set it to use RS232 instead of RJ45.
Another thing to check is to make sure the USB to Serial adapter actually works by connecting to a different serial device if you have one or even go through the local drivers settings and check if there is communication.

I have 4 of the new 65″ QMF series display series. The documentation seems to indicate that it can be used for a videowall, but there is DisplayPort Out on these monitors to create the loop-through. The manual illustrates how to daisy-chain control using RS-232 or RJ-45, but includes nothing on how to pass video from one monitor to the next.
Any help you can provide would be great.

Given that more people are on mobile devices than PCs, it is no wonder the market is moving in that direction. Also, I went to a digital signage fair in Germany earlier this month and the main thing I got from it is how rapidly digital signage is growing. I mean, it is going through the roof! It will be interesting to observe where this form of marketing will go.

I’m trying to set up a video wall using dh55e although mdc looks like the answer no one talks about input. Forgive me if I’m being slow but I want to use an HDMI or doing source do connect the same signal via a d.a. to all four screens and the mdc then does the rest?
There are several ways to setup the video wall and below is a brief outline:
1. Make sure you have the Input to the first screen as using HDMI.
2. Then connect a display port cable from the Output Display port on the first screen to the Input on the Second Screen
3. Then keep daisy chaining the Display port so that the output from one screens goes into the input until you have reached screen 4. For screen 4 all you will be using is the input.
5. Connect all the screens to the network and make sure RJ45 is configured as the management interface
6. Setup the video wall so each screen has it’s own unique ID. This can be done using the remote control or via MDC
7. Setup the video wall so that it’s configured as 4×4
Hopefully this helps.

Can I do it from my own application (that can send Ethernet commands)? What is the communication protocol (TCP/UDP)? What is the port of the Display?

You should be able to use the LAN interface to control the power ON/OFF. You should use TCP port 1515 to send the commands.

I have a samsung syncmaster 400dx-2 that was locked using an older version of the MDC software (i can only use it using a vga connection). Any ideea on how could i reset this action?

Hi Alex,
I’m assuming you don’t know the pin code to unlock the screen. The only way I’ve heard to unlock the screen if you don’t know the PIN, is to remove the internal battery (like the computer one) so that the memory is cleared.
The default PIN the screens are set to is 0000. You may want to try different codes.

When downloading from Dropbox you don’t need a username and password. When you start MDC just leave the username and password blank.

Have you tried admin as the username and no password.
If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software again.
By the way… i don’t have a screen anymore. It’s locked in “pc connect” via vga connection. This is actualy the issue. I can’t change it to hdmi or any other source.
I have one laptop and want to open 4 different browser on it and display each browser on different screen of video wall. Am using ud46-p . How can I do this using our end laptop connected to video wall and each screen showing different browsers.

Yes you can do this. My suggestion is to use a tool called Launcher Dock http://www.launcherdock.com which will allow you to start automatically a browser or application on each screen. You just need to set the location of where the browser should launch. The tool is free and good luck.

is it possible to use this software to create a 2×2 video wall using 4X DM32E samsung tvs? i can’t seem to figure out how to do it using this software. I have the screens connected to a switch via rj45 cables and then an rj45 cable connecting the switch to the computer. The tvs do come with magic info but i can’t seem to set up a video wall using the magic info application.

Hi Ed,
You will need to firstly configure the screens themselves. Make sure you have configured the screens so that they are using RJ45 and that the magic info software can see each screen individually by giving each screen a unique ID.
If you can’t use MagicInfo then try using MDC and see if you can connect to them via that software.

I’d like to connect MDC with 4 x UED46 monitors and am hoping to use it to change between a 2 x 2 video wall with the same input (DA’d HDMI probably), and showing a single input on the DVI input, unscaled.
Does anyone know if you can assign the video wall to specific inputs or will I need to switch video wall off to then switch to a single input?

Great to see you using MDC. From what I understand, do you want to display the same content on all 4 screens via HDMI and then on each screen individual content via DVI?

I need some help here… MDC which I downloaded (from the link you provided), looks a bit different than on the slides on this site.
I’ve just connected my monitor via RS232 and MDC says that I have 1 connected device but all tabs are grey, so I can’t do anything but change user settings and logout.
Do I have to have multiply monitors connected to start using this application? I just need it because it has option of virtual remote control which I don’t have to unlock Safety Lock on my monitor.

Yes, the download link is a newer version and the interface is different.
Which model of the screen do you have?
A few things to check is to make sure on the actual monitor, you have setup an id for each screen and make sure RS232 is selected. With regards to the Safety Lock, there is a button on the remote control to Lock/Unlock the screen, then you need to enter the pin. The pin by default is 0000.

Hi, stupid question but how can i get my PC to see the Monitor? I have a Samsung 320TSN and I have downloaded MDC and the display driver but the MDC programme doesnt find the Monitor, if wont find the IP? is there something i need to do to obtain the IP on the display?

Hi Tom,
That’s not a stupid questions. I’ve also encountered a similar issue in the past. You just need to make sure the Multi Control Setting on your screen has the MDC connection set to RJ45 MDC. By default its set to RS232.

Paying attention to the design of company content and making it visually appealing is also vital for better digital signage.

The installation is very clean and the video wall looks great without question but I wonder about what the purpose was of implementing such a wall? If you look at the image, the 2nd & 3rd column screens together equal the size of the screens used in columns 1 & 4. So why not just have 3 columns with all the screens being the same size? Too bad we don’t know more about this project to understand what they were trying to accomplish.

Yes, you can connect all for monitors via Ethernet. That is now our current setup.
All you need to do is install a switch so that each screen is connected to the network. Then ensure that each screen obtains an IP address and then configure it so that the MDC software can see it.
This is actually a pretty interesting post, At first I had problem reading the sign on the “ayam” food truck – it is interesting a “water coconut” food truck – where is this food truck?
This food truck was located in Sydney Australia for a Chinese New Year event. Based on the information on the truck I think this could have been just a once off unless they reprint the text on the side of the truck as it specifically says Chinese New Year.

The input sources are the devices you want to connect to the TV. For example, if you want to connect your PC using HDMI to the TV then you would need to connect it to the HDMI input of the TV. Hope this helps.

Login: admin
Password: admin
Once you login, click on user settings and you will be able to change the password or create a new user account.

The Samsung commercial grade screens are designed to be used for digital signage via the WAN or LAN. The DB22D screeens have a RJ45 port so that they can be connected to the network for management purposes and also for MagicInfo Lite.

As Richard mentioned, it is illegal in more countries for TV displays to be seen by the driver, as they are a distraction. There are many car dealerships deploying digital signage, from wall mounted to free standing, some are even deploying outdoor LED video walls, to promote new model launches.

I agree with you Philippe. We also generally don’t recommend our clients to use residential screens. In Australia, there is also no warranty if the consumer screen is used in a commercial environment. That doesn’t stop businesses who are on a tight budget to purchase these consumer grade screens.
One recent example that I heard of is that a company used 4 consumer screens for a video wall. A few months down the track one of the screens failed. So what happened? The screen model was end of life and they couldn’t purchase it. So they had to buy a second hand one from Ebay. What now happens if another one fails and they can’t find one on Ebay? They will most likely purchase 4 new ones (commercial grade). OUCH!
From experience, out of the many screens we’ve installed, not one has failed. This includes the old plasma commercial screens.
Also just to note that some of the screen manufacturers (LG and Samsung) provide onsite warranty for commercial screen.
A nice article there Nate. I do however have to take issue with your comments on using consumer displays in place of commercial displays. I agree the costs of commercial displays are far in excess of those of consumer/domestic displays but it needs to be pointed out the reasons why.
I don’t know about the warranties offered in the US but here in the UK it is almost guaranteed to void any warranty on a consumer screen if installed in a commercial setting. Yes we’ll always get those people who say “for the cost of a consumer screen i can afford to replace it every 9-12 months”, while being true is it really worth the hassle having to source, purchase, install a new screen every 9 months?, you try getting the same model you purchased last time, I bet you can’t!
What about duty cycle (the amount of time a screen is on compared to off). This is typically far lower for a consumer screen than a commercial screen, even low priced commercial displays can have low duty cycles of 12-14 hours.
Other things to be aware of are brightness, viewing angle, cooling, bracket choices, player mounting, cable containment and a whole host of other issues which should be considered before deployment.
Digital signage CAN be done on a budget, personally i feel the screen/display is one of the most important aspects of the installation (apart from content, which is a another discussion altogether!) but i don’t think this is the first place the budget should be cut.

You are correct Judy. Pretty much all digital signage solutions should at least have simple transitions. Thanks for highlighting this point.
Most digital signage software allows at least simple transitions. Transitioning ads or digital signage content will not allow screens to ‘burn’ images into the screen. It is only when unchanging images are on the screens for long periods of time that this happens. Try using at least two layouts that the screen transitions through.
Now digital signage is becoming more popular in advertising industry most of business owner are using this medium to reach target audience.

LCD displays are one of the best ways to advertize your campaign, product or business. The major advantage of using LCD signage is they are Eco friendly and are easy to install. Moreover, a single LCD signage is capable enough of running many ads, one after the other.
It’s always better to have more inputs and outputs than you currently need, in case you need to do some hardware upgrades in the future.
Curious how this tested out? What tests did you perform to benchmark?

* theft – here in Taiwan, unlikely somebody will push the guy to steal this bike..
* what happens if it rain? is it a waterproof screen? : not sure…
* what happens if there’s a strong wind? will the bike fall? : I guess…
* will pedalling generate more electricity for the battery to run the screens? : not far as I remember
* safety – if the screens draw too much attention to drivers will it cause accidents? : do we prevent hot chicks to go out because they can cause accident? 🙂

The website that I posted is not us per say but that is the company that we ended up going with for some graphics. I am not very experienced with many companies but I will say that they did a great job designing some digital content for us. We are already making some money off of it! 3D is the best great info in your blog but lack of picture.
While i’ve not used pre-payed 3G yet, i’ve setup a friends linux laptop to auto-boot to KDE4 login he enters his password and the desktop starts, connects to the internet useing Plasma-NM which will prefference to wi-fi picking the strongest signal, failing that it autoconnects to 3G, and registers it’s IP address with DynDNS so I can ssh to his laptop if need be. He much prefers entering one password and then has the browser up and surfing vs. Windows where there are many many popup’s about anti-virus not being able to update, windows security popups and other popups he has to close to eventually being able to connect via the provided 3g connection manager, then manually doing all the up-dates for all the addons windows needs takes 10+ minutes vs. < 1min with linux/kde and not being stressed with viruses especially when doing internet banking. His system is very similar to standalone system, but he is a low-skill user who expects it to 'just work'(tm) linux provides this, windows fails big time.

Interesting to read however it seems that digital signage technology is progressing but slowly.
I recall producing one of the first interactive kiosks for the Harvey museum in 1995 and thinking ‘this will set the world alight’. That said, at least flat screens and cheaper, lighter display technology is moving it on at a better pace now; plus the ability to update and download video and display content remotely and across multiple networks.
Great post, but do you really think touch screen is the future? even with the release of kinect inspired technologies that enables gesture based interaction which can potentially be cheaper, easier to maintain and encourage more interactivity since multiple users can be using it at the same time.

This is a very interesting topic. We have found that most businesses prefer that the equipment be provided as a service. This reduces that high upfront cost, while still allowing all signage that is requested.

We needed a fixed IP to push the content from the server, so we created an APN (the 3G provider delivers the encrypted data to a carrier who routes all information to our ISP, there we finish the tunnel). Our players are not open to the internet (it is a critical retail solution, so we wanted to avoid any attack). Furthermore, this solution is safer but cheaper as well, we don’t have to pay for mobile fixed IP-s, here in Spain they are still very expensive.

I believe the screen is in an uncomfortable high position to be effective. On top of the window.
Maybe there was a good chance to install the screen at a more effective eyesight level, by replacing the board located at the right of the window.
Unfortunately, we haven’t tried rear projection film – there’s hasn’t been a demand from our customers.
Develop your own software is a valid alternative.
Most of Players out there are full of features that you will not use, or if you do, they won’t bring anything good to your screen.Most of those developers think that if it technically can be done, it should be done. And that is not good. They don’t know about marketing, they don’t study viewer behavior. Mostly, they never did business using that player. They just add a lot of of ‘cool’ features to the players and, as a result, charge very high prices for the players.
If you know what you need. If you keep it simple and don’t try to imitate the ‘big’ players. You can get your own reliable Player for a fraction of the price. And believe me. In advertising the simple approach is what works.
John, you’re definitely right. Most manufacturers have developed their system based on what everyone in the market demanded I.e. tried to fit all the features and requests based what their clients wanted even though they may not use it at all. And yes this means the client and end users ends up paying extra for it.
I have however noticed that once the user starts realising the potential of what digital signaled can do, then they will want these extra features.

15 consumer screens installed (well known brands). All working 14 hours a day for 4 years, connected to PCs.
Any of them have failed. If any of them fails in the future, no problem. It was already amortizated long time ago, since it is cheap and worked for several years.
There is no clear justification to buy a industrial screen, paying more than a double price.
The price difference is based just in marketing reasons. Since companies can pay more than consumers, so the companies have to pay more. Thats all.
The same happens with many other products and services. For example DSL Internet providers charge a lot more to company or a business than to a home consumer, for the same Internet service speed.
I guess it comes down on the following:
– maintenance agreement with the client. If you have back to base warranty and its a large screen then having to bring this to the repair centre can become costly. I.e using two resources to take down the unit and then delivering the screen to the nearest repair centre. If you had onsite repair which is covered by warranty then the better but whichever way you look at it, it does come down to money.
– professionalism and reputation. Depending on the size of your company and your client, would you want to have the reputation of install consumer screens?
Wow that’s an impressive record. Out of curiosity do you leave the screens on for 7 days?
I also agree with you that there is some marketing ploy to get businesses to pay more – at the end of the day businesses don’t have to pay for tax (gst) and can claim it as a business expense.

There’s a few digital signage players and software systems that have GPS capabilities. Some of the ones we’ve seen and used are also linux based.

Bob, many thanks for the insight. We have been in the digital signage industry for quite a number of years now and we agree with everything you’ve said. For small new businesses, I believe it’s hard to raise capital especially when you don’t have the client base or the portfolio. We were at one stage thinking of heading down the path of looking for investors but didn’t like the idea of giving away a percentage of the company.
In Australia, there aren’t too many digital signage network operators because the investment capital to setup the network is too high. I have noticed that large advertising companies who already have exposure and the cashflow are actually sustaining this operation (I’m guessing that they are potentially offsetting this cost from their existing print media).
What do you suggest for new small businesses who are looking to raise capital or even look for financing companies.

Similar to Bill, we have found that the presence of movement tends to naturally draw the eye, as opposed to more static content.
As far as static content goes, we’ve had luck differentiating with the usage of accent colors. Features like thresholds that trigger a specific color (red being the obvious choice) for a key statistic tends to have positive effects. The thresholds must be set appropriately so that the thresholds are not routinely triggered, effectively wearing out your viewing audience.
I think quite a number of businesses like yourself who come from the traditional static signs are hesitant to use this technology because of the technical support required, however I would suggest you work with someone like Advertise Me who have been in the industry for a number of years and are able to provide a solution that requires very little technical support. Advertise Me is able to provide you with the complete package and not just supply you with hardware – they can support you both technically and strategically.
I’ve got to agree with you on all the benefits of digital signage, but I am a little wary to jumping in due mainly to the continual technical support that I can forsee clients needing. I’m not arguing that they are not thte future, I’m just a little wary.

As I’ve got it, I could purchase 3G Broadband PCMCIA only with the intention to use it in a 3G Broadband router, and most digital signage players do not have PCMCIA slots, right? Worst is that my laptop does not support PCMCIA card, therewith.
Rebooting systems should only ever be a last resort. systems housekeeping and deployment should be automated with tools like puppet or at least rsync. Achieving 24×7 availability has been around for 20+ years. My experience with 154 systems in registries over 200 days in semi hostile environment (no aircond after hours, no ups) shows 11 systems rebooted, 7 powerfailures, 2 hardware failures and 2 unknown/software failures. Obviously these were not Windoze systems.
Content should be handled by a repository system enforcing the workflow and distribution to devices.
What we have found in the past is that site surveys are done in winter when the light is lower and a demo is set, up then the client signs it off, then when in the summer and the brighter sunlight the issue is raised.
It is similar to wireless network signals, when they first came out and when in the summer businesses find they cannot access the internet, they found that the trees had leaves on and this was the problem as autumn was when the site surveys were done.

The biggest screen I’ve seen was at a U2 concert about 5 years ago. The sign was massive, providing a backdrop for the band, and pretty much blinding anyone who looked directly at it.

You also need some good unique content that catches the eye of the customer, i have found that bespoke flash content really catches their eye.
I have built a piece of software that goes into the digital signage system that emails me if and when their is a problem with the digital sign. This software was a simple piece of php used with linus, ideal for digital signage systems to make sure they are live.
Your first tip you mention is very true. With the competitiveness of digital signage growing so quickly you better have an edge on everyone else in the field. I have discovered that placing importance on unique enclosures helps greatly.
Microsoft Surface is an off-the-shelf product, but focus is still…. too young as just demo.
And in the video, he needs a special pen, a lot of inconvenience for users,
right on about thinking of energy consumption with digital displays. especially now that they are popping up everywhere – that’s got to leave a pretty big footprint. looks like linutop just came out with an update on their pre-installed software exactly for digital display and kiosks. so that should make it even easier for folks to save energy while implementing digital display.

Stereoscopic 3D for digital signage is really catching on. N4D’s 20 years of perception research has been developed into patented processes for creating 3D content creation or 2D to 3D conversion. We are currently in talks with digital signage networks to provide 3D content as well as no-glasses-needed 3D displays.
It appears that the ArtDuck product is 2.5 D (or some call it CAD drawing 3D) in that it gives a great appearance of depth but only inside the screen and is not designed to be projected stereoscopically beyond the screen plane.

they seem effective if there is audio playing as part of the video clip. My understanding is that they are effective in influencing purchasing decisions. Given that they are relatively cheap and affordable, the ROI should be high. Maybe someone from japan can comment on this.

think you are barking up the wrong tree here. These LCD screens are in the front of the car and digital signage would surely be distratcing to the driver and possibly illegal (as front mounted TVs are in some countries) – GPS and menu systems are permissable but I doubt advertising would be.
Where can I see the winning video’s? It’s got to be interesting to view.

We’ve had situations whereby the player’s time was not synched or did not have the correct daylight savings setting and this really messed up the content scheduling for our client. I’m sure other digital signage businesses must have experience the same situations we have.
I agree with the other commentator, great article. I thnk the importartance of synchronisation will become increasingy more important as digital signage gets more sophisticated. I can imagine people downloading content directly from live streams and distributing around a signage network – I also think more interaction with digital signage will be the way forward and I can imagine NTP servers and other time synchronisation tools becoming more important.

Its a pity I couldn’t capture the actual display of the tall LED signage, the camera lens of my blackberry does not seem to snap well at night. It is actually a large LED display rotating between moving adverts.

You are right. PR of your website is 3. and in my opinion it is not a bad idea to buy it anything between 8000 to 15000$.
I don’t think what google wave provides is a good match to the requirements of digital signage. Providing a CMS
capability can be done with google docs already and free if 7gb or so is enough and can stage content in chunks if need be. Access the content is quite easy if using a language like Ruby via their REST’full api.
Great questions asked by Advertise Me and some great comments made by Concerto. I definitely share the same mindset with regards to the last question (next big thing) – focus needs to be in interactivity.
Open source models are great for a number of reasons –
1. there is a wider community involved in improving and sharing the source code
2. there is no costs passed onto the client
However I do question how digital signage companies are to profit out of these solutions. How would one charge for this kind of setup? I’ve never worked with open source technologies before and keen to find out how.

It depends whether the digital SaaS platform has been designed with redundancy and external backups. Basically, the SaaS platform would reside on a dedicated server that hosts the application. So if there is no strategy in place for the hosting company to backup the content on an external site (i.e what happens if the building gets burnt down?), then you would loose all your content.
In reference to your article on the subject of DS content back-up, isn’t a digital signage SaaS platform the answer?
Seems affordable for small scale projects but one of the issues is the battery life. Can the reader recharge the small screen player? Can it be reused?

regarding the market price fro China on small screens motion player the price should be min $40 piece… if you order by thousands of units. + printed stuff and integration… $65… each erader will show it to around 10 people. anyone knows an advertiser ready to pay $6.5 per viewer?

The proposed solution is too expensive in Capex and I do not see the ROI.
Future of this category of advertising mixing printed and digital motion will come in the next years with the flexible screens (Philips, Sony and others are already showing prototypes on their websites and some major exhibitions like Las Vegas CES). Today, we have seen already outdoor tries using e-ink.

Digital media is certainly becoming the main focus for advertsiing but print will never go away as tacticle gifts such as promotional gifts deliver a personal experience that digital media alone can not delver.

Well written. Do you know that the digital dish TV network allows you to have hundreds of channel. Satellite TV network has variety of channels starting from basic channels, music video channels for children, educational channels and family channels. You also get to watch your local channels at much affordable rates.

The iphone as apple have defined does not allow any sort of programming language to be installed on it. flash includes actionscript a javascript language and it therefor violates Apples terms. This is unlikely to change in the near term. This is going to limit severely the applicability of the iPhone to digital signage.

The Chrome OS’s whole raison d’etre make it bad for digital signage. The whole idea is that its a stripped down OS (at least in its initial launch). This means it’ll be lacking drivers and packages–it’ll only work on the netbooks it’ll ship in. It won’t be able to run most of the apps a real Linux distribution would be able to and it’ll have even more trouble supporting different types of hardware than a proper distribution.

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but there are several digital signage companies that are using the Linux OS with the firefox browser as their digital signage application/player. Having said this, I strongly believe that using the Google Chrome OS is definitely viable especially when the Chrome browser is meant to be much faster than the other browsers.
There are also several issues that I’m aware of with the linux firefox browser and third party apps like Adobe Flash, Video players etc. So hopefully the Google Chrome OS will be able to resolve these issues.
In terms of cost savings, it was meant to be a comparison with digital signage applications that required the Microsoft Windows OS.
Chrome OS will certainly be interesting to watch develop, especially now that Google has OEM agreements with HP, Acer, Asus and Dell. Unfortunately, the author doesn’t know very much about it beyond the PR hype.
Chrome OS will never be a good operating system for Digital Signage Players. Allow me to explain.
1) This is not a new OS, it’s just Linux with the Chrome browser bolted on as the primary UI. This is nothing new, several linux distros like Moblin have been doing this for a long time. (moblin.org)
2) There’s no cost advantage. Several DS vendors already support Linux, which has a 0$ cost.
3) Specifically geared for the netbook experience. Netopps certainly make decent Players, but definitely not netbooks. Seeing as the OS will be installed directly by the OEMs, the driver set will probably be pretty restricted.
4) All applications run in the cloud. You cannot install an application like a Digital Signage Player that runs locally on the machine and uses the local system resources.
Chrome OS is specifically designed to facilitate the everyday online experience: getting online fast, checking your email, watching youtube, updating your facebook, tweeting about Michael Jackson, etc, etc.
So that’s why Chrome OS will be woefully inadequate as a Digital Signage Player operating system. On the other hand, you could probably use it to administer your network via one of the numerous web-based interfaces, provided you DS vendor supports the Chrome/Webkit browser.
Thanks Kevin and Steve, it’s interesting to know that there are actually companies out there who have built a digital signage application for the Iphone. When I get some time I’ll see if I can test it. Also, who are your main users or which industry are you targeting for this particular application?
I really don’t think so. I can’t see why anyone would want to open an application to be fed messages by someone else? I doubt it would replace the iPhone main screen, so it wouldn’t fit into normal day-to-day activity (like ‘normal’ digital signage does).
There are plenty of RSS feed applications on the iPhone which already provide various information sources. And they’re personalised too, so you get the feeds you choose. I personally use Google Reader on my iPhone and it’s all the hand-held information I need.
However, will the iPhone be used as a tool for digital signage? Absolutely. Like a window into a web-connected world, the iPhone (and other web-enabled phones) offers a great way to manage screens, update messages/prices, etc.
So as a screen? No. As a way to control screens? Most certainly.

I’m all for keeping costs down, but I’m with you about ‘doing the right thing’.
All of what our company does (selling video content for DOOH – including music videos) is based on exploitation of creative works and we are very careful to make sure that all rights owners get paid. We’ve heard stories of one competitor who’s been sailing a bit too close to the wind a couple of times and of course they got caught out and caused themselves and their clients great embarrasment. Which is not good, but worse, it was the the end-user customer ( a retail chain) that got sued first and thats really not good for our industry. We all work hard to develop our businesses so anything that goes against this is to be strongly discouraged.
You do well to explain the issues around music rights to your readers – its true that there are many misunderstandings around – so keep up the good work!
Music should be definitely paid for and I’m not suggesting that musicians who are not be paid. My post was more relating to the licensing fee and requirements – just advising businesses to do the “right thing”.

I don’t know how it works in Australia but in Europe artists can join collecting societies without passing via a label and can therefore benefit from ‘neighbouring rights’ – i.e. the use of music other than directly from record sales.
You might suggest to Legaci that they check out the rights situation and take whatever action they need to in order to be able to earn a living from their creative endeavours.

Bill has many good points here. However I think that the next big thing in digital signage is content harmonization and transformation. Bill is focusing on the \cool\ technology, which is great, but there needs to be a solution that can first drive more businses from advertisers. Sure we can talk all day and night about holographic interactivity and facial recognition virtual reality, but the true reality is that this industry needs a sophisticated solution that can unify all digital networks so that advertisers can buy media more efficiently in this space.
Or at least the menus on printed paper…
With the new round of LED signage going up, many businesses are again looking to upgrade their existing display(s). While the new LED lighting may be more expensive upfront, the savings are immediate and systems usually pay for themselves in under 3-years. Utilizing an equipment lease to obtain such energy saving equipment almost always makes excellent sense.

There are two modes of LCDs, normally white and normally black. This means that, at rest, not powering the transistor, the window (sub-pixel of the LCD) is either open or closed. LCDs were once all “normally white” since a display is usually more white than black (look at your PC monitor). Normally white will use less power if more of the display is white or a light color. This mode was picked years ago so notebooks would use less power. The problem arose when the notebook industry, followed by the monitor industry, and finally the TV industry found that dead transistors meant that the little sub-pixel window is “open” all the time. This is the cause of the dreaded stuck bright red, green or blue dot.
The answer is that all large area LCDs are normally black. Normally blacks use more power on a typical image (if there is any such thing as a typical image), than normally white displays. So, today’s set use more power but the dead pixels are black and not stuck on. A fair compromise in my opinion.

I finally managed to resolve an issue with synchronising my outlook with the blackberry storm via the desktop manager.
The issue: When using Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Outlook 2007 with exchange 2003 all on the same box, I couldn’t synchronise outlook with the blackberry – issues with mapi32
Solution: Go to a good PC which has Outlook 2007 installed. Follow these steps”
Copy the olmapi32.dll from the good pc c:\program files\microsoft office 2007\office12\ to your c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\ on the problem PC
Copy the mapi32.dll from the good pc c:\windows\system32 to c:\windows\system32 on the problem PC
Copy msmapi32.dll from the good pc c:\program files\common files\system\msmapi\1033 to c:\program files\common files\system\msmapi\1033 on the problem PC
Reboot and this should fix your problems.
I think that is a great idea! I just had a root canal a few months ago and I was thinking then how nice it would be to have a TV screen to pass the time. I have been to dentists in the past that offered movies, but a lot of the time there is very limited choice. I think a combination of Digital Signage (using scrolls and side bars for advertising) and a digital movie server would be ideal. Allow the patient to select their content and give them some nice headphones to hear. The Dentist could have some sort of mute button so he could speak with the patient when needed…..

This is a great point to bring up. But I’ve found that many news organizations allow customers to use RSS feeds as long as they are given proper attribution in the ticker.
However, it’s always a good tip to check out what the various rules are for each feed.

I believe Asian countries do not have any regulations relating to outdoor digital signage… or i could be wrong.
Off premise advertising sign laws typically pre-date the advent of digital signage and therefore do not specifically address digital signs. The California code, similar in many states, requires changeable signs to change in one motion and hold for a minimum of four seconds. This is one reason why you do not see video or animation on digital billboards.
Los Angeles has a history of sign code litigation and settlement agreements that pre-dates digital billboards. The introduction of digital bulletins to the Los Angeles market via both static board conversions and new structure builds has contributed to this latest effort at billboard regulation and will likely restrict digital deployments if/when legislation is approved.

I was walking past a shop today and noticed that there was a screen located on the wall opposite the cash register. I thought about this post and decided to walk into the store and ask the shop owner why did he decided to install the screen at that location. His response was simple: “I can easily see the screen from here whilst serving my customers.”

Would I be right in assuming that rather than using CATx a better solution to extend video is Fibre? That way you can achieve a better bandwidth to carry the video?
Video-over-CATx systems I’ve used send RGB similar to a VGA cable, not data like on your computer network (hence you can’t mix them or throw in a D-Link somewhere in the middle). The good one’s will take a VGA signal and send it up to 2000ft. @ 1920×1080. The issue when you’re sending a video over long distances is that the red, green and blue signals travel at different speeds. The longer the distance, the more pronounced the lag between colors. This leads to distortions in the image like ghosting. That said, these systems include the possibility to tune them–adjust the speeds of the signals and other characters to get a perfect image. The same issue happens with any long video cable, that’s why commercial LCD DID’s include long cable compensation and the same type of tuning capabilities. I’m not familiar with systems that take digital signals (i.e. HDMI), so I don’t know if any of the above would apply.

Digital Signage has not really gathered that much momentum in South Africa. We’ve come as far as the LED billboard and that is where it stopped. We do have small players sprinkled here and there trying to make things happen. I believe there are other countries that are left behind even further.
We’ve had some nifty Japanese technology on display at a recent exhibition though.
So how would you about getting other countries on par with the rest of the world as far as digital signage is concerned?
Audio is the most widespread and noticeable way to initially engage a consumer. By editing the music with the content and creating transitions to other types of messaging be it newsy, or entertainment or an ad, will make it palatable and more like a comfortable experience for the consumer. They will be entertained and hear and see your message

Its an interesting concept, I am interested to see what the turn out will be. Operating a network on a global scale doesn’t sound like an easy task for a group of small businesses to cook up – but it’s not impossible either.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on this and see how far it goes. Is there currently anything in place to get this ball rolling?

Maybe the national network and maybe later on int’l network, could be broken down into sectors. When pitching advertising to large companies present the different sectors to them and they choose where they want to advertise. Also, maybe we can pitch emergency mgmt also. Once again just throwing ideas around. I think if enough people get on board it could be beneficial to everyone involved.

I agree to both the post and the comment above. You’d be surprised that many digital signage installs are done perfect at the end point attached to the screen, but loosely open when you have to connect a router/modem to the other end.
In saying that, I attended a call the other day to fix up some internet issues at a local cafe. The owner didn’t know what the password to the router was, being typical of me I tried my luck. Not surprisingly, I got in first go – the default admin/admin had not been changed. Now I had free access to their network, including the attractive large screen on the main wall.
In response to Don, I totally agree with you. Digital signage companies really need to follow up and keep in contact with all of their clients to ensure that they are getting their ROI properly and in the right way. Its not called a Digital signage solution if all you provide is just the hardware without any good use to it. Because it is still a concept in its infant stages in some countries, I don’t think business owners have the proper mentality of how it should be used vs. how they want it to be used.
The idea sounds great, and if done well can open up many gateways to a lot of things.
But the question I ask is “how will it be used?”. That is, once we have this amazing global network of operators, what do we do with it?
Probably one of the assumed applications would be advertising (of many other uses), because this is the medium that will fund the network. I understand that if it was managed nationally, this can be controlled. But as a global network, you will find a lot of problems with management rights – if Coca Cola was to be approached, which country would you send the proposal to?
Having said that, perhaps a national network would work well, or I could be missing the whole point to this?
This is a great idea if we all come together with a plan. Everyone please leave a comment on how you feel about it. It could be a great opportunity for the small business owners.

This is a great anecdote and you’ve done a public service by posting it on your blog. It made me laugh. However, I wish to add this more serious comment:
Digital signage has an image problem to overcome. While checking out a book at a local library, I pointed out a digital sign behind the checkout counter. Both librarians rolled their eyes, saying they thought the sign was tacky, wishing it wasn’t there. I must admit, the message being broadcast–luxurious spa treatments–seemed to have little to do with the interests of the average library patron. And my own experience with so-called “clinic TV,” including health-related programs displayed in doctors’ waiting rooms, isn’t much better. Most “shows” I’ve watched while waiting in a doctor’s office have been blatantly self-serving and lacking in credibility.

In the past two weeks, I’ve noticed that several businesses in Australia have increased prices on their products. I hope prices will come down in the next couple of months as it may now be more difficult to win clients if prices are high.
The current economy is obviously a challenging time for the advertising sector in general which will have a high impact in the digital signage space. Like in any bad times there are also opportunities for many niche companies that are able to provide good value. If digital signage media owners in the Out Of Home sector who are able to provide low rates and good value (High visibility) as compared to other traditional mediums like TV, Print & Radio. With reducing ad spends (There is talk of ad budgets getting reduced by 50%), ad spenders will look at alternative mediums with good visibility. The overheads and costs are low as compared to other traditional mediums and this should help the digital medium to gain more prominance amongst ad spenders also.
We’ve been informed that two companies have gone bust:
Reactrix – this a USA based company which provided interactive digital signage
Novax – this is a French digital signage company in Pharmaceutical industry
We’ll add more to the list as we get more information sent to us.

It is great to hear that you’re intending to start a mobile digital advertising business.
Besides the fundamental digital signage equipment that you’ve mentioned, you will need to consider how you will be updating the content onto the computer (or digital signage player). If you intent to remotely manage and update content to these devices you will need to connect these devices to a cellular network – ie 3G, CDMA (basically connect them to the Internet). This will give you the option to also centrally manage and distribute the content to multiple box vans.
There are many digital signage products and software in the market which will help you setup your digital signage solution. As a start, you may want to visit the digital signage portal products page (http://www.digitalsignageportal.com) for a list of products and software packages.
By the way which country are you from? Are there any legal issues with displaying LCD screens in the box van – I’m assuming the vehicle will be stationary or the screens will be in locations where other drivers will not be distracted with the animiated content.
